Who was it that hadn`t heard the Bathers song "Dealing in silver" ? Well its available by clicking on the animated picture on the main page. This is quite an early song originating from cassette as most of Demos Vol 1 does. I squeezed every particle of magnetism I could out of those tapes :o) Aw man its getting desperate now isn`t it.......where the fuck are you Chris ? Bring back the buzz...........

Hi Jimmy! Thanks for that. I really love "Dealing in silver" - the guitar-play is excellent and Chris' voice is marvellous. I'm always getting goose pimples (hope that is the right term ;-)), when listening to it...
Is the version on "Friends Again" similar to this one?

The guy who was asking about the Paul Buchanan tour can find all the info on this site - go back to the entry for February this year (Jan 06 - May 06 section). As for Grant McLennan , really sad news . The Go - Betweens will always have a wee place in my heart because i bought their 1979 - 1990 compilation on vinyl on the same day as Sweet Deceit (sometime in '90). I had a couple of their singles and wanted to check them out and then saw The Bathers one in the New Releases section beside it.I'm sure it was Billy Sloan i'd read , raving about SD in the Sunday Mail.Anyway , even tho i was skint i forked out for both of them and , bloody hell , both records are still giving me great pleasure all these years down the line , not a bad days record buying ! Grant will be sorely missed not least by his friend and co

Very sad about Grant Mc...just on Sunday there I chanced upon some Go-betweens on the iPod and played them for the first time in ages little knowing what had happened a day or 2 before. I remember they had one of/ the first single released on the great Postcard Records late 70's...great stuff!

RE.The Sweet Deceit Paul Simon lift "she came to tell me she'd gone...as if I didn't know that....". IThe girl in question had just returned from the Graceland tour ( catering for PS ) so that prompted this as the sentiment seemed so apt and the irony of the situation irresistable.
The other great irony in that album was that it was "inspired" by infatuation on 2 fronts...one with my then girlfriend who did the PS thing and the other with her best friend and as it happened Jimmy G's then main squeeze..."sordid details following"

For the record I never fell out with James even after the FA split and I think he is too much of an artist to have held the girlfriend thing against me for long (just unrequited and misguided infatuation indeed).
I guess he understood that kind of temporary and overwhelming madness. Hope we can do something again soon!

As usual i've got 2/3 books on the go at the same time !
"Rip It Up And Start Again" by Simon Reynolds is good (so far). It's all about the Post - punk explosion of brilliant bands/music/arty concepts.I'm on the chapter about The Fall and that glorious nutter Mark E. Smith.I've never been entirely sure if i like him and his music or not (some great singles mind) but i'm glad he exists ! We need characters like him.
Fiction wise it's an old fave - "Preston Falls "by a guy called David Gates , he writes for Newsweek and only has two novels that and "Jernigan ", both superb.
What's people all time classic favourites ? Personally i go for "Lolita" by Nabokov a work of genius......

Thinking about Lanark by Alistair Gray reminds me of something . . . . ... I know a girl called Claire whose father is a novelist (Bernard McLaverty) and he was a friend of Gray's in Glasgow. She was into the bands Hipsway and Love and Money and i started telling her about THe Bathers and the James Grant connection cos she loved his stuff. Eventually i made her a tape with the only two Bathers albums on it (this was 1991) and she never looked back . . . just one of my many converts ! Wonder if she ever reads this ?

Having been away, I just wanted to add how shocked I was to learn of Grant McLennan's untimely death on these pages. The last album 'Oceans Apart' is such a good album. Impossibly good for a band who, not only split up and reformed, but were several albums old. It just shouldn't be as good as it is. He will be missed as I always thought his material was frothier compared to that of the strict, disciplined Forster. Similar to David McComb in fact.

Thanks Chris for adding colour to the PS lyric on 'Honeysuckle Rose'. Whilst it doesn't make a great song any better, it just adds that bit of detail that always had me wondering. I read somewhere that you are an Ennio Morricone enthusiast, like myself. But did I read that you played with him at some concert..or am I delirious? And furthermore, what album titles have you got in mind for your future release? That'll keep us jabbering for a couple of entries on this site..

I've been left slightly deflated by the latest releases from Shack and Roddy Frame. Maybe i was expecting too much but , hey , that's what being a crazy music freak's all about . Both records are good , with the occasional stand out tracks , but overall i feel that they repeat past glories and don't add much. Nothing wrong with revisiting the same territory (Van Morrison was brilliant at it , so's Nick Cave) but you have to find new ways to do it. Maybe that new Bathers one isn't such a good idea , we'll only be disappointed. Anyway , Shack gets 7/10 , Roddy gets 6/10 , could do beter guys........

Haven't been on the site for a while, nothing much has changed - the disciples waiting on a few crumbs from the Master's table...not even a sniff of the new album...and ongoing arguements about the (de)merits of The Blue Nile. Scott Walker's The Drift - good luck with that, everytime I try to play it my cat skulks away as if in fear of a pending earthquake (which would probably be more melodic). Preston Falls - an awesome book. Alexander Trocchi, if you fancy a bit of Scottish eroticism, Ian Banks for a bit of Scottish goth (but not the SF stuff). Lanark is of course a classic. Grant McLennan RIP - I strongly recommend "That Stripped Sunlight Sound", the DVD has a live concert in Brisbaine, but also a brilliant session with Grant and Robert Forster talking about their career and the origins of their song

...songs, then playing them on a couple of acoustics in the comfort of their front parlour. Particulary poignant in the circumstances is Grant's comment at the end about a great future ahead for the go-betweens. I'll check in again in about 6 months, see how that Blue Nile debate is developing.

There's no flaming debate cos i'm not accepting criticism of a fantastic , talented guy like Paul Buchanan from someone who likes Van Der Graf Generator . Even if he does do the Bathers site ! GM , it was all a highlight mate , every song done with passion and feeling , lapped up by a crowd who gave about 4 standing ovations in all. Only cover was Strangers In The Night done in that magical Blue Niley Styley. He sang the first two lines, stopped and said "you think i,m kidding eh?". I did comment to my friend about the lack of Lets Go Out Tonight but Saturday Night made up for it...... Pure class.

Oh dont get me wrong I totally agree that the audience appeared tolove it. Or was it made to look that way by all his family and friends shouting out? I absolutely loved the look on his face when he said to the reception "what if we are crap" and got the answer "you were crap last night!!!" The reason I didnt like it is that when the link to the acoustic set was published here I really enjoyed that and when a few days later his "solo" gig was announced I thought I was going to see PB doing an acoustic set. If I had known it was just going to be another blue nile gig I would never have went. Seeing them at the Kings Theatre a few years back was enough to make me stay well away. It's a very rare thing to find the perfect album, where every songs works to the overall tone of an album. 'Sweet Deceit' is the ultimate example. I may have found another. Many may mock my choice, but trust me this is a majestic piece of work. Stuart A. Staples 'Leaving Songs'. Simply 10 song about erm.. leaving. Leaving behind old friends, lost loves, old habits and dreams. Perfectly pitched throughout this is the album he was born to record and will never better. It's only 37 mins long, put aside your 'voice' prejudices doubters, we encourage non-CGT converts to do the same after all.

Have you all seen this? It's The Bathers and Liz Fraser on an STV arts prog singing Angel on Ruskin. I taped it on video at the time, but someone posted it here recently.
I first got into The Bathers when I heard Liz Fraser was on Sunpowder, I'm a huge Cocteau Twins fan. Then I found out my friend had been into them for ages, so he leant me Sweet Deceit.
We ended up going to see a few gigs in the mid to late 90's...some of the best I have ever been at. Spoke to CT at the West End festival in Glasgow one year...a thoroughly decent chap! Saw him at Paul Buchanan the other week, which was strange as I saw Paul Buchanan at a Bathers concert in Paisley one time. Mutual admiration!

Davie I post video here from time to time but to be honest you are one of the very few who show an intrest. If I do ever get broadband and can keep this site alive there will be a wealth of stuff made available if I casn find the space to store it. I once had my own domain and the domain people removed all my vids and mp3`s. When I told them it was my stuff they said it was professionally produced material and therefore they assumed it wasnt mine. I should have taken it as a compliment but they didnt even apologise so I quit them.

I just realised that www.thebathers.com no longer works. Nobody told me that the .com was no longer being paid for and I wonder how many people out there think the bathers site and band is completely gone? I know a lot of you would have probably just put a direct link to the front page in your favs rather than going through all the "welcome" shit every time but what about those who didnt ? hmmm ....the footsteps fade....

Thanks for the fb Michael. The original bathers site was .com and a redirect had been in place for years and I just happened to notice it was no longer listed. In face bathers.net also redirected to here. It only costs about a fiver per 2 years for a domain so it wasnt much to make sure people always got here whether they used com co uk or net. Just in case the .co.uk lapses it might be an idea to keep a note of www.btinternet.com/~jimmysmith which is the actual address of this site and is the address that everything directs to.

I never left Jimmy. Once A Bathers fan forever a Bathers fan. Besides it is always interesting reading other Bathers fans views on other artists. Being a very ecclectic music lover I've found the mention to The Blue Nile, Shack, the late Grant McLennan and the Go Betweens, Roddy Frame and so on really interesting as I like all of them. I was and I am a huge Pale Fountains fan and I also like Tindersticks and bands like Trembling Blue Stars whose debut album Her Handwriting I really recommend you. And let me confess here that I am a huge Kate Bush fan. I think she's a true genius and her latest work Aerial is a masterpiece. And once again, Jimmy, thanks again for keeping it up.

Yes, Jimmy, you did send me that beautiful cd of a very young Kate Bush at her piano. I forgot to mention something on my previous post. I think the Bloomsday cd deserves a lot more recognition than it gets. I think it is really outstanding material as almost everything the great Neil Clark has been implied in. And then of course there is a certain Chris Thomson. I also think the only Friends Again album is absolutely brilliant and I think it perfectly passes the test of time. Isn't that something that makes a difference between a great album and a classic?

Bloomsday has never clicked for me. I keep trying but have just no interest. It bores me tremendously. There are great moments, just so terribly MOR. Sorry CGT, just not your finest hour. On the other hand, Friends Again stuff is just wonderful and still stands up despite the era, although 'Bird of Paradise' deserves the 'Flu'.

Barry...you made me think of something....everyone assumes that CGT modelled himself on Bowie whereas in fact he modelled himself on BRIAN FERRY!!!! It was BATHERS fans who decided the Bowie thing and cgt just went along with it but he told me himself that Ferry was "his man" not Bowie although he does indeed like Bowie too. So there you go...these revalations LOL
From: GM

..to add to the Bowie thing. When UPTD came out, I had a summer job working in a hotel lounge, and on Sunday's I used to put UPTD on in the lounge as my choice for the customers. On many occassions I had random customers coming up going: "Is that David Bowie's new album?" So it wasn't just Bathers fans that made the connection...plus there's that radio snipet on Trapped and Unwrapped too...

My first listen was Sweet Deceit and when Bathers fans mentioned the Bowie thing to me I always thought they meant that CGT had the "feel" of Bowie and not so much the voice. It was much much later round about Sunpowder time before I actually heard UPTD and I think there is only one song on there that sounds like Bowie nothing else. And you just made me think of a story.....a big story.......

I hang out on a Bowie group on the net and there was a guy who used to post wind ups all the time...a post would appear saying something like "Bowie gig on radio 1 tonight 9pm" and of course everyone would be scouring the net and phoning friends etc and it was all just rubbish. So I decided to get revenge....now I dont know if any of you know this but a few years ago Bowie was intending an album called TOYS which consisted of re-recordings of many of his early 60`s stuff..........

All the Finnish friends to whom I've played the Bathers have been well-impressed, it's just that you never get to hear it anywhere. In any case, don't lose faith. If The Triffids can be resurrected after 20 odd years, there will be a time for the Bathers as well. Dear Bathers,
I have been listening to your first album for a long time.
I didn't know what it was called. I've just read the lyrics on your site. I listened to it a lot in 2000 and laying on my couch.
I like all of them. But Will You Dream About Me, perhaps the best. And Pink Fleshed Girl. But all of them.
I tried to get your music in 2004. I ordered it from America. But I was murdered. So couldn't pick it up from the record shop. I'm going to try to get it again. I had no idea the albums.
I always thought that you were a band from New York.
I had no idea you were Scottish. But I thought it was a very black sound and a bit like Bowie. And the South.
I loved it so much and am so much looking forward to listening to the other albums. But I haven't got that one now, even on tape. The person who gave m

Very sad to read the following at Chris`s Bathers site in Germany.......Dear friends,
I started this webspace on Geocities nearly ten years ago. Since then, the internet has changed dramatically. Yeah Stevie, but your cup of tea wont taste the same when your not with the Bathers. One thing about the Head brothers is that they have an uncanny knack of making crap subjects and lyrics (cup o tea; the postie, the milkie) sound reasonable, especially after a few pints. Aye, aye, jiggered, aye eh!?!

The previous comments I've just read regarding communication from Chris need to be taken with a pinch of salt I feel. After all, how many other artists do you "follow" post messages to any forum to give on insight into what they're up to at any given time?....... Sure, I agree, whenever Chris makes a conribution to this guestbook it's always an arresting read, especially with tentative promises that the next album will be with us soon........

What would be equally welcome woudl be something which the Human League's Secrets Online, and electro band Client's website have been doing for quite some time, and that is posting either rare, live or demo versions of old tracks.......

It only need be the odd track very few months, but it may be something to capture the attention of doubters like our friend....is it "Stephen"? who believes that Chris has lost it??! Hmm, keep the faith, is what I say, even if CGT is incommunicado for months at a time. Excuse me but if you look back through the guestbook pages you will see that I have been posting rare unreleased stuff for quite some time and recently I have been posting video material to the YouTube website! As for Chris being quiet for months....eh...what???...correct me if I am wrong but isnt it more like SEVEN YEARS!!!!! Also there are many artists who post regular to their own websites, Look at Bowie for example..he actively takes part in his, regular! Many other artists on the MY SPACE websites post daily/monthly/regular blogs! And it was nice of you to introduce yourself (sic) by blasting another regular and long serving poster who is perfectly entitled to his comments and not just another Bathers arse licker!

Chris has given me some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful music i will ever hear and i still love him for it.Nothing will ever change that.I'm a happily married man of 13 years but in my lifetime i could have 3/4 wives but there will only ever be one "Lagoon Blues" !

Aaaahhhh....the heady, heady fragrance of reconciliation. Stephen, we all understood your frustration and never doubted your loyalty for a moment. Besides how many others can say they're a founder memberof the Bather's Glasgow Locations Tour?? BTW Jimmy, remind me never to get on your wrong side! Thanks for that lads. A good few years ago now the Bathers played at The Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow and the support band was the Pearlfishers (both were on Marina Records at the time). This worked out fine as i liked both and the wife loves The Pearlfishers. It was a great gig but a bit unconventional as the crowd were seated around tables with candles on them , that kind of supper club vibe.At the end we were down the front dancing to Carnival and loving it.She said they were superb that night but still prefers Pearlfishers , Elvis and Cocteau Twins !!! (loves the Liz Fraser tracks mind you!)

nice little story stephen. maybe to bide our time, it would be nice to see people recount old Bathers stories, especially for those who never had the chance to see the band live, or followed them on their way up. i got into the Bathers a few years ago so this would be post-Pandemonia. The first song I heard was Dutch Venus because I was investigating Liz Fraser's work outside of the Cocteaus. i remember stopping dead in my tracks when, towards the end of the song, Chris belts out "nothing else exists, nothing else is real”, and I completely identified with the emotion. it was quite overwhelming, that a feeling, welling up inside of you, could be let out in such a way. it was also at this moment where i knew there was nor will there ever be another band or musician that can get right to the heart of the matter

GM - I have this image of you sitting in the potting shed belting out Gracefruit with your gnomes on backing. Stephen, the Pearlfishers...aural sunshine. Aren't they from Grangemouth? Also home to the cocteaus. It is amazing how many people have been turned on to the Bathers via Liz Fraser's contributions on Sunpowder. If you haven't caught her version of Song To The Siren you should do so immediately...makes the hairs on yer neck stand up.

The Pearlfishers main man Davy Scott comes originally from Camelon which , like Grangemouth , is right next to Falkirk so its the same general area. I live in Denny , a stones throw away from both.
When i first started going out wit h my wife (circa 86)she was a real Cocteaus fan , i preferred The Smiths .Gradually i was brainwashed tho'. This Mortal Coils "Song To The Siren" is her favourite song ever so i've heard it about 3 million times ! Still love it tho'.

I've made a great CD up with a few Cocteaus faves plus Lizs' Bathers tracks and her work with Massive Attack (Teardrop) and Craig Armstrong (This Love). She's brilliant and very sadly missed from the music scene today.Must confess i haven't checked out Robin Guthries recent solo CD which had some fairly good reviews.
Best Cocteaus album ? Gotta be Treasure surely ?

hmmm...victorialand or blue bell knoll..depends on the mood. robin guthrie's stuff is very good, mostly ambient, space drone, which i'm always a big fan of. side note: i mentioned to someone the bathers a while back and he threw Anywhen's "The Opiates' back at me. i picked it up long ago and it really is something for the bathers fan. try and seek it out.

Blue Bell Knoll and Heaven or Las Vegas myself...though I was a late admirer. In the CT's death throes she seemed to pop up all over the place with guest vocal spots; amongst others mentioned she also popped up on one of Ian Maccullough's solo dumps. But the question that needs answered is how did the Bather's thing with Liz happen? Who asked who out? And why no extra publicity at the time of Sunpowder's release, eh? I saw no mention, no article at the time and I'm a review junkie!
From: Barry
Posted on: Saturday, August 26, 2006, 08:20 PM
Treasure for sure! Then Blue Bell Knoll for me. Stephen from Denny, yet you frequent Paradise? Surely an oxymoron. I lived in Kirkcaldy for a while and had mate that lived somewhere near Falkirk...Croy?? Corey?? Something like that. Anyways I first got into the Bathers when I saw Sweet Deceit in the window of a record store in Falkirk (Sleeves?). I bought it on a whim cause the cover looked interesting and it kicked on from there.

oh, and The Opiates is indeed to be recommended, although more on the downer/darker side of CGT's stuff in my opinion. Another recipient previously mentioned an Australian band called The Apartments and I agree that they are close antipodean cousins of the Bathers. A Life Full of Farewells and Fete Foraine are both highly recommended.

A few random thoughts .........
I too bought Sweet Deceit from Sleeves in Falkirk , a fine shop sadly now defunct due to the new HMV and Virgin stores.Aiden Moffat the Arab Strap singer worked in there for years.I got the Go - Betweens double LP the same day.A good day !
GM , when the Bathers toured Sunpowder they played The Garage in Glasgow , a superb gig with Liz Fraser on as a special guest , duetting on the Sunpowder songs. Jimmy filmed this but jealously guards the tapes !
It was the only time she appeared live with the band bar a TV slot.

to answer Michael's point..UPTD came out late '87 and everytime I went into the local record shop that little green cassette kept drawing my attention. Front of shop; B section; for weeks I picked it up and set it down again. When I finally bought it I was completely blown away. I played that album endlessly. It was the best thing I had ever heard. I never got tired of it. I STILL am not tired of it. You just couldn't get any better...

...and then along came SD. My favourite album had just been bettered. I was 20 when SD came out [just sneaked past the 'baby i'm 19']; my on off girlfriend's initial began with a C and this bloke who had just made the greatest album ever with UPTD was now signing about me frankly. And with the most gorgeous music, stunning lyrics. Damn near the perfect album. A lot of you give praise to Lagoon Blues. Great though that album is, it just couldn't and didn't have the impact on me of those first two.

Funny when you are looking up at 40, you look at it with dread. When you look back at it, you look with envy...hey I'll need to work that into a lyric.
Yes, Sweet Deciet is THE masterpiece for me. It just doesn't get any better than that. I have a soft spot for KB, it's probably the most accessible, but it's a time and place type situation, reminds me of a time in my life when I was very happy and content. But, hey I'm seperating the albums with straws here, they are all magnificent bodies of work. Can you imagine the pressure on CGT to at least match it? No wonder it's taken 7 years and counting.

Whilst the Liz Frazier thing is still rattling around, she also guested on a Moose album: 'Live a little, love a lot' in the same year as Sunpowder. I mention Moose because they are one of the great ignored bands. Four albums of delicious pop with a real twang and a side order of sweet strings. Four fantastic albums, now no more...maybe it's the curse of Liz.

Do you have a favorite Bathers word or phrase? My favorite is "diaphanous" from Fermina Fair. I have used this word religiously in conversation since I discovered it..."Oh, that hat has a diaphonous viel". I also like "Heliotrope Haze" which I also think would be a great name for a Bathers Tribute Band.

The entire lyric 'For the delicious C'. Not a single wasted word. I love CGT's seemingly invented words such as 'Psychosomania' which gets you scuttling off to find a big enough dictionary - before spellcheck was invented! But the one thing i loved about UPTD was that there was no lyrics printed. It took me years to figure out what some lines were. He should not print lyrics, it's more involving. But who else would write lines like: "Make me an assignation with a joy ride." Exactly!

hmm...there's so many to choose from. the first song that came to mind was "the fragrance remains insane". all of the lyrics are really quite moving, but this part always strikes me the most: "I climb to your room/ High on a royal crescent/ Hear a trombone caught in the heat pipes/ Blow so incessantly/ And on your sultry breath I taste time." there really is so much detail in the lyrics that i think if CGT wrote them all down, bound them in a leather case, poetry publications would come running wanting to speak with him.

Check out the "I Believe In You" video by Talk Talk on YouTube. Another great and underappreciated band with a genius songwriter and a great voice (Mark Hollis). I have the Mark Hollis solo album. If you like Laughing Stock you will love it. Why do you think he will never record again? I saw Talk Talk live several times, don't know whether its "substances" or what, but they were interesting experiences. I can definitely hear Talk Talk in elements of Lagoon Blues - particulary the percussion on Pissoir, and the structure of some of the songs. Anyone know if CGT is an admirer?

I'm a big fan of Spirit Of Eden , a masterpiece. I had Laughing Stock on vinyl but couldn't quite love it as much. Maybe a reissue would be good.
At the moment i'm afraid it's all Classic Sinatra in my house , specifically the tremendously blue "In The Wee Small Hours" and "Sings For Only The Lonely" . "...when Sinatra sings over Nelson Riddle strings......". You can't go wrong with genius like that.

The crooner thing happens to us all...Well at the age we're all at, you can't pogo in the mosh pit anymore.RE: Mark Hollis. When his solo album was released I read an interview that gave the impression of a man who had given up. Lost interest. The remix bollocks and bucket crap released that Jimmy referred to, under the Talk Talk brand, seemed to have broken his spirit. Plus it read like he wasn't a well man. And Spirit.. and Laughing Stock are of course superb albums. The tales of their construction make a good read too.

GM, is there some material that you could specifically refer me to, or is this mostly based on review and interview stuff from the periodicals?? I must have missed all of that. I do remember he said "don't play 2 notes when 1 will do, and don't play one unless you have a reason to". I had just really put his absence down to him trying to create the "maserpiece" rather than losing interest.

Barry my opinion on Mark Hollis is just that, an opinion. It's a case of reading between the lines, listening to his language, looking at the history and the fact that since 'Mark Hollis' he hasn't recorded a single note anywhere. Check out the following website which has most of the press from that period: Within Without. At least CGT's visit here every 6 months has intent in his language, vacuous or otherwise.

Stumbled across this link with my morning coffee: http://www.last.fm/music/The+Bathers. I haven't really got my 'what the..? head' on just now, but there does appear to be a rather interesting chart listed. Check it out.

Pretty good link that Gm and it's nice to know that so many others actually care about our band. I wish i had more time on my hands to get involved a bit but life's too short!
