Theres a video of Angel on Ruskin at the Cottier 1996 but I would disregard the dvd bit as "not anytime soon". If you are on dial up like me it will take about 65mins to download but if you are on broadband you can dowload it a bit quicker. I hope someone enjoys it! www.btinternet.com/~jimmysmith/angelcott.wmv

Hope there will be an European tour with a stop in Switzerland sometime. I'm absolutely fond of your pop romantics. The songs are more than "just similar" to Tindersticks or Belle & Sebastian. They are really outstanding. Hope to hear from you again. Good luck.
Bye for now, Felix

I reckon your only chance of seeing The Bathers live anytime soon is on your telly mate ! See Jimmy for DVD's etc. I'll settle for my old video tape which has the live set for STV and an earlier clip of Chris being interviewed by Alan Brown intercut with the band playing in a deserted ex - church somewhere, remember that one Jimmy? circa '97 i think. These are the crumbs we've had to live with.

for anyone who hasn't picked up the demo discs, i can assure you they are quality recordings, and might as well be considered official bathers albums. i continue to be delighted by them..ie. in perpetual adoration(live) chris inserting 'like a virgin' into the end of the song...tons of little nuances like this, as well as big surprises...essential!

Stevie....I think what you are rembering was filmed at the Kelvingrove Art Galleries!!! Was it bits of ILCLF ? And the Angel on Ruskin you saw on the TV is one of the few clips on the VIDEO page which still works. The other video clips were stored on a place which stopped free storage and I have nowhere to put them. And hey.....thanks for the comments on the Demos Michael M. I used to have FERMINA FAIR from some arts program but I lost it. I think chris has some real interesting early video stuff which he promised me to make a dvd with but I forgot and he forgot etc etc There was a film shot video in b&w of Gracefruit whch is one gem I remember. I hope you all saw angel from the cottier I posted the other week....not one person said they d/l`d it so I wonder sometimes......

PS what's all the fuss about this film of The Da Vinci Code , some bloke searching for the Holy Grail ? Pah ! I happen to know where the real thing is,preserved behind security glass, resting on a velvet cushion. In my spare room of course and otherwise known as Sweet Deceit on vinyl!
Hasn't the guy who painted the front made Chris' nose look a bit big and bulbous (check it for yourself Chris), still maybe he had a big plook that day.
Anyone know if that covers based on any other painting or what all that stuff in the background means , its mental. Still a sublime album though , a work of art in fact.

Do you remember a few years ago someone stole the baby jesus from George Sq in Glasgow? Well I know where that is cause someone told me a few years ago! Now as for the painting......I`ve never had it confirmed or even thought to ask but I have always suspected that CGT himself done the painting. The album doesnt do the picture justice at all.......I remember chris showed me the actual film acetate of that picture and it was superb...all the little transient colours in the clouds etc (if thats the right term of phrase). Looks stunning when you are so used to it and then see it in superb quality!

Interesting Jimmy.I've actually got 3 copies of Sweet Deceit (how "anorak"!).It came about because i bought a copy on vinyl after reading a review of it by Billy Sloan in The Sunday Mail (i think).Totally loved it and played it to death and then went and got the CD.Played that and kept the LP safe.A couple of years later i got talking to a bloke at work who said he'd bought it on vinyl but didn't like it much and he'd only played it once or twice.Moron. i said i'd by it off him but he gave me it for nothing!! So now i play the old vinyl one sometimes when i feel self-indulgent (and all the wee crackles etc make it sound much better than the CD) and keep one in immaculate condition , i'll donate it to a museum when i die cos by then Chris' genius will be recognised and it'll be a priceless artifact.......

I too have an old not bad nick copy of SD and a mint unplayed one which chris gave me a few tears back as he knew I was such a vinyl fan! You have to play the vinyl for full emotion. I remember a test I done on Haunts of Ancient Peace........pee wee ellis`s sax solo.....on vinyl you could feel the emotion welling up through your chest as the sax got more intense and with the cd.....NOTHING...on that same day I decided that with cd the sound begins at the surface of the speaker and ends in front of you but with vinyl the sound begins inside the speaker and ends somewhere round the back of you..........

nice way of putting the vinyl experience jimmy. i was thinking of my lone copy of SD on vinyl(how small do i feel) and it occurred to me that I cherish every crackle and pop on it. just as 'desire regained' begins, there are a few pops that will be there forever, and to me, are engrained in the song and have become a part of it.

I am sure I mentioned on here before that Chris once told me he had a whole collection of tv clips of the Bathers AND Friends Again!!! He suggested I compile a video from it and then it never happened for one reason or another but I will approach the subject again to see if I can come up with something! The only thing available so far is the Scottish Television "Boxed Set" live performance which is in the OTHER CDS section.

Hello all. I am new to this internet lark and have been indulging myself on the last few years of 'the bathers' e-mails... this I will get to later and summarise.
I am a huge Bathers fan and I shall explain thus:
I am the sad individual that writes to Q and Uncut and gets Perpetual Adoration played on Radio One during Simon Mayo's reign [if Chris got a free lunch out of that - mission accomplished!].
So.... Friends Again wrote some classic eighties pop tunes, neglected for far too long [ Deacon Blue, Hue @ Cry and WetShitesWet got more press for christ's sake,; explain thatt !!!!]" Unusual Places To Die" is a genius album, "Sweet Deceit" is jaw-droppingly good- and life changing. 'Bloomsday' is an afternoon spent with a sick relative. The 'Marina Trio' is a fan-boys compilation, with endless possibiliti

Ahem..cough..as I was saying the 'Marino Trio' albums provide ample tracks to cherry pick from to match your mood, when Chris was operating on a creative surge. And I don't understand the negativity surrounding 'Pandemonia', I actually like it a lot. Curiously I really don't like 'The Belle Sisters' though. To my ears plodding and pubby. I have more to add surely but for now, Chris..Get a bloody move on!

I agree about 'Pandemonia', I think it is truly a work of art... the sleeper fragments/Sundown and Longing and the title track are fantastic. I've see a few somewhat disparaging comments about Pandemonia. I think they are totally unwarrented - great CD. BTW, Anyone else on the list admire James Grant's guitar work on 'No Risk No Glory'?

Let's assume that Chris is in the throes of completing his next album...has he secured a record deal? Is he still with Wrasse or has that contract been terminated? And why does he not contribute to this site with updates to keep the faithful suitably informed?
And as a scribble... am I alone in making the connection with a lyric in 'Honeysuckle Rose' and Paul Simon's 'Graceland', or is that common knowledge and proof that I am dim-witted? If so what other occurances like this may I have missed?

Hello Everyone
Thanks for looking in...
Yes I m working hard on a new album and am hoping it will be available in time for the Xmas "rush"...I had about 30 "pieces" that I am trying to filter down to 10 or so for the release. Things like UPTD and SD were made in the vinyl era when the 18 minutes a side was a kind of Holy Grail for Audio Buffs. A nice side effect of this was that albums were a manageable length. I expect this new one to be about 40 mins worth of hopefully scintillating stuff.
PANDEMONIA....yes some good stuff on there but suffered from poor editing/sequencing and to make good on this I have prepared a special new edition that makes good the failings as I hear them and all in all makes for a GREAT album. 2 tracks axed completely!!
SWEET DECEIT 2 is ready and waiting in the wings.....

Anyway , here's hoping that finally the work of art that is Lagoon Blues will get some recognition when it's re-released.The climate will be more receptive to it these days especially if review copies reach magazines like Uncut , Word and Mojo which weren't around in 1992.I can tell you've been busy Chris but it'll be worth it i'm sure. Now , about that residency at Oran Mor.........

I cant imagine the Bathers not touring to promote any new album that might come. If they do then I hope it will be a whole new band (as long as Hazel remains) to create something fresh and new. No disrespect to the last "current" band but Chris has always changed musicians in the past and thats what keeps it fresh and exciting! I believe there were certain influences in the recent past which were taking things in the wrong direction and I would like to see that change. This is of course a personal viewpoint.

Good point about quality of all the Bathers albums rxp. I agree. Most artists are viewed as 'greats' due to one or two 'great' albums. But what about their body of work? Surely a measure of consistancy in quality, sustained throughout a career, is a better mark of greatness [draw up a list..it won't be very long]. Those 100 greatest albums lists don't reflect this yet that seems to be the yardstick to some, if not most.

All Richard Hawley albums worth a try, a bit hit & miss at times, but the voice carries those weaknesses. Other tunes at moment from Tahiti 80 [ very smart pop tunes, though singer's voice weedy; try "Wallpaper for the Soul" 1st], Four tet, Iron & Wine [with or without Calexico], Josh Rouse[mostly '1972' album], and if you haven't got Nick Cave's 'Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus' set, well all I can say is I listed to it practically non-stop for 6 months when it came out... Ray Davies was superb Jimmy , playing all the classics from way back and a great little acoustic section featuring songs from the classic Village Green Presevation Society album. He should do a tour of that album actually in the vein of Brian Wilsons Pet Sounds and Smile tours.
I can't tell you what the Ferry is like though , not because i was too drunk to notice , but because it was at The Royal Concert Hall :)

Chris, It was me that requested chords (or tabs). I'm an ex-pat Weegie living in San Francisco and my band does a version of Thrive in our set. It usually attracts a lot of attention from the audience, so it helps get the Bathers name out there! I would LOVE to see some of your chord progressions on this website cause some of them are waaaay beyond my interpretation. Lot's of capo usage and dropped tuning. Come on Jimmy, devote a tab page on your brilliant website!

UJ the videos DO NOT WORK except for the last one on the page "angel on ruskin". It is because the webspace they were on is no longer available to me and I dont have the room to store them on my BT webspace. Any videos that are linked to from the guestbook dont work either as I only put them up one at a time for about a fortnight each time. When I post videos they is NEVER any mention of them so I assumed no one was interested and stopped doing it.

I would love to know what everyone here is thinking about the Bathers album “Desire Regained“. Is it worth a buy even when owning all the original albums? I read somewhere a very bad review, but I can’t believe that there is a Bathers album that bad ;-). So your opinions on this are highly appreciated. Many thanks and cheers, Peter

Most of the tracks on Desire Regained do a disservice to the originals. The songs feel limp and the performances sound like they were phoned in. Give it a miss.

If it was the first i'd ever heard i'd probably think what a superb discovery this band were but it's fair to say that nothing on it compares to the originals .
Actually , i'm glad i bought it cos i like the art work and i love the wee poem at the start....wonder if Chris has ever thought of putting out a poetry book or a novel , i'd certainly be into it.

VDGG were superb!!! The venue is INCREDIBLE I loved it. Thats the ABC 1 I was in which is the bigger of the 2. The stage is enormous and the sound was superb and van der graff played like they had just done a 100 date tour. Superb musicianship and at the encore Hammil sat at the piano and done the most beautiful version of "Refugees" . I went home and into the local pub and a guy handed me £60 worth of Paul Weller tickets so away I went the next night and he was superb too. Then the following night I went to Boo Hewerdine at Tuts and again another fine gig!

No I wish I had because I was up on a little platform thing at the back and it was the equivalent of leaning on the front of the balcony so I would have got a nice clear clean balanced recording. But then whether i would have actually managed to do it is another thing as I was in a slightly altered state for the gig! Did I say slightly? Hmmm some might disagree... Thanks for the tips GM. I've got one Josh Rouse CD Nashville Hmmm.... I'd only give it 6/10.Pleasant enough but i don't love it.I like a lot of Americana so i've been meaning to try Iron & Wine for a while, may well do it now.Other tips from me....what about The Trinity Sessions by Cowboy Junkies , a classic or maybe American Recordings by Johnny Cash , the first of his efforts with Rick Rubin and last but not least Tom Waits' Holy Trinity (as i call them) his 3 mid-eighties masterpieces namely Swordfishtrombone , Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years. Thanks for those Stephen. The Waits trio are there but haven't listened to them in ages...again with Cowboy Junkies. And have a good batch of Johnny Cash but for some unexplained reason I don't have the Rubin recordings. Guess always on the ' have to get around to' list. As for Josh Rouse, 'Nashville' is really weak and 6/10 even generous. I don't like it. Dull. '1972' is like a recording from a differant artist and has a broader palette which is why it works. Right off to 'Amazon' for 'American Recordings'...Merry Xmas to all who visit here.

Me again. Yes I've all AMC recordings from their first 'Engine' right through to their most recent 'Songs for Patriots' and including little known offshoot band 'Toiling Midgets'...I kid you not. The most epic however is 'Songs Of Love' a live album by frontman Mark Eitzel. This is the one to make as your entry point. Raw, raw emotion and wicked phrasing. Real 4am and a bottle of red stuff! 'Mercury' and 'Everclear' are about the best two AMC albums...depressing though. If you're feeling down....phew hello black!

Saw Mark Eitzel in Belfast after release of 'West' (crap solo album), but the sound was rubbish and his mood got blacker and blacker, so he resorted to gurning at the crowd and belching. He gave up. Solo career really patchy and didn't like '..Patriots' at all. First AMC album called 'The Restless Stranger'...bugger all chance of tracking that one down.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Bathers Album Year. Jimmy, thanks for the 17 minute christmas gift - unbelievable quality for something he put together for his mates. Any sign of those guitar tabs yet? On the "new material" front, I enjoyed the Stephen Lindsay album (Exit Music) so much that I went back and revisited my old Big Dish albums. What is it about us Scots? How can that "No Mean City" culture continually produce such winsome brilliance? All 3 albums are good - "Swimmer"; "Creeping Up On Jesus" and "Satellites". A touch patchy maybe, but some absolute classic tracks on on all of them. He also recently released a kind of "best of" which I think was called "A Rich Man's Wardrobe".

Paul Quinns a great singer but he's never had really great songs to work with , i love his version of Misty Blue though.Anyway , New Years Resolution is to give up on The Bathers (i reckon Chris has given up the ghost to be honest) and buy more CDs by the Worlds Greatest Living Songwriter a certain Mr. Billy Joe Shaver who is absolutely amazing and the Real Deal. Check out his classic The Earth Rolls On from 2001. Macic.

A yes Phil, the wonderous Paul Quinn. I pulled out "Will I ever..." last night and its awesome, especially the sprawling title track. I had the other album, but i can't find it..in fact I'm struggling to even remember the name of it. "Maybe, if ah pray every night.......every night".

paul quinn's first album is called 'phantoms & archetypes' and is very good. i prefer 'will i ever...' much more so, and even consider it a masterpiece..he used to be in bourgie bourgie and the jazzateers, and i've heard that he has been suffering the effects of MS over the past couple years and has been unable to sing and perform..great artist..dearly missed

Was just checking the guestbook for any news on the Bathers reissues & new material, and I noticed that there was some talk of the Triffids. It might interest you that The Triffids back catalogue will be reissued this year by Domino records starting with remastered with extra tracks "Born Sandy Devotional". All the albums will be republished this year & all will be remastered & include rare extra materials. There has been also talk of issuing the very rare pre-Treeless Plain cassette recordings but nothing definite has been decided on that yet. The project is coordinated (& albums I believe remastered) by "Evil" Graham Lee from the Triffids & all the remaining members of the band are participating in the project, so it should be a good one. Check out also www.thetriffids.com, excellent site run by Graham Lee

www.thetriffids.com, excellent site run by Graham Lee with loads of free, rare Triffids-related MP3s. Anyway, good work on keeping The Bathers candle burning. Cheers from Finland!

THats great news about The Triffids back catalogue ' they were a superb band and i'm sure any Bathers fans who haven't heard them will enjoy them.I'll certainly go for reissues of Born Sandy Devotional and In The Pines even tho i have both on vinyl and CD.The "best of" was good as was Calenture and The Black Swan and ..... o sod it i'm away to play them again........Bathers , Nick Cave , Triffids , American Music Club , Scott WAlker , Jeezus you'd think I'm a depressive sod but i'm happy as hell , honest.
Be even happier if The Bathers put out a newie tho'
