it seems, from all the comments i've read here, that the one bathers album i don't have, lagoon blues, is the one i'd most enjoy and treasure. anyone who notices a copy for sale, let me know, or post a message. i have a feeling my life is not complete until i have it.

I know you are probably looking for an original but if all else fails remember there is a cd clone available and from what I gather mine are a bit more quality than the CD ON DEMAND guy. For a start I use prfessional HHB cdr`s costing 10 times the amount of regular ones.

Micheal , there isn't much doubt that the two greatest Bathers albums are Sweet Deceit and Lagoon Blues , both works of utter genius. I personally prefer Lagoon but it's a very thin line. Do yourself a big favor and order a copy from Jimmy as i can vouch for the quality of his stuff and you won't be disappointed. Damn it , i envy you , how i'd love to relive the sheer pleasure and joy of hearing that album again for the first couple of plays...i was in heavenly raptures ! !

i guess my last message didn't make it.
no, i've never heard anything from LB. i don't have the best-of either so i haven't even heard the the songs redone. never saw them live and since i live in america, i probably will never be able to.
there is some excitement knowing that a piece of the puzzle still remains in LB. there isn't a day goes by i don't hear at least one bathers tune. so really, several years down the line, when i hope i haven't exausted all the bathers releases, i can take solace knowing i'll have a fresh one to treasure. jimmy, with all due respect, i must continue to search for LB. i'm sure pretty soon though i'll be calling on you for the demo discs i'm so eager to hear.

Mention of Carnival brings back many happy memories JImmy , i used to shout for it at every Bathers show i went to. If you watch the tapes of the Garage gig you'll probably hear me and Chris engage in a bit of banter about it. Happy days indeed. My favourite was at the Mitchell Theatre though, a night and a half. Chris wore the then traditional garb of black suit and white short with a red flower in the lapel , totally suave and of course they only had songs from the first three albums to choose from plus some Friends Again numbers. Im geting on a bit so i may be wrong but didn't James Grant come on to lend a hand ?

Stevie....you are so right about the Mitchell.....what on earth was it that gave you that feeling? Sheer magic.....the anticipation in the air was electric and I for one had never seen a Bather so really didnt know what to expect. The gig went on forever....a 45 min set followed by a 15 min break....then another 50 mins at least and then a 20min encore. James Grant did indeed join the show and they done Moon3, Perpetual Adoration, Unusual places and the only time a Bloomsday song was ever done at a Bathers gig.....Universal Thirst.....what a night.........so in celebration of I will post some video of it soon but its VERY dodgy indeed!

Still sitting here thinking about the Mitchell..........Easter for Edda Van Heemstra!!!!!!! The song began with a white film screen rolling down in the background and there was an old black and white movie scene with (?) kathyrn hepburn being shown as backdrop. Chris`s vocal was superb........I was heartbroken that my camcorder tape jammed at that bit and I ended up with only half a song :o(

A small point of interest Jimmy. I can't remember it but i'd bet good money that the actress on the video screen that night was Audrey Hepburn because Edda Van Heemstra was her real name. Come on J any Bathers fan worth his salt should know that ! :)

Just wanted to say that Chris Thomson is an absolute genius, and the music he makes with The Bathers is stunningly, swooningly gorgeous! Even if he never makes another record, what he has already given us is enriching and heartening beyond measure (but I certainly hope he makes another record!). I am a fan in Seattle who discovered his work a few years back... Not a day goes by that I don't listen to, or think about, one of his songs-- "Sunpowder" is my all-time favorite album, especially "The Night Is Young"-- but all are incomparably beyond anyone else's music. Now I know what it must have been like to live during the time of a Van Gogh or a Vermeer, an (unheralded) artist-genius whose work makes your own life and loves worth struggling for. Thank you, Chris Thomson and The Bathers... please know that there

Hi Jimmy. I had the privilege of witnessing what I still consider to be the absolutely best gig I have ever seen at the Tramway in 1995. It was all the more special for me, because I had travelled up from London especially for the event, and was lucky enough to meet Chris and the band (not forgetting James, of course!). Anyhow, the question I have is: I know the show I saw was filmed - will it ever be made available in full on DVD? It would mean a lot to me if it was! Cheers, Jeremy.

Jeremy......I am assuming that this was during the time they did a week at the Tramway? In october 95 or was it the earlier shows in March where they did 3 Sundays in a row? If it was the former what show (night) were you at? If you are not sure you may know from the support....Mon Jackie Leven Tuesday was a combination of people from AC Acoustics and Swelling Meg....Wed was an american girl called Freya Bow or something like that......Thursday was Chris & James doing an acoustic Friends again reunion and friday was swelling meg

Michael.......The Bathers Demos Vol 3 has the songs from LB but are different versions and a few are instrumental I think. There may also be a couple of songs on the demos not on the official release! Why cassette? Were you just determined that you wanted the album in some sort of official capacity? Remember that I do a cd clone of this lp on HHB Pro Discs and print all labels and sleeve on gloss paper so its the next best thing to the real McCoy! Burned at 4x speed direct from a pro audio rip of the original silver disc. .....sales pitch over :o)

oh, just to note, i finally received 'lagoon blues' and on first listen, it is not what i was expecting. to be honest, from what i've read, i was anticipating some of the more drawn-out, string laden ambiant moments from 'sunpowder' matched with cgt's longing romanticism. i receieved something entirely different, and am quite happy with the results. for my taste though, a track like 'venice shoes' shows a direction i'd like to see more of.

...I recall that was a wee improvised opening...I did that often to kind of get into the performance..
occasionally something really good came out and we decided to keep it...
as best I can make out it was "someday your going to meet somebody..or else you're going to fall..
but thru mist this terrace seems brighter when you are up the water
and when you are summoned you're so sure to fall"..................................................................
In case people are wondering about "up" the water I reckon its a reference to the River Clyde mabye and being "further upstream" obviously people in Scotland will know this so thats for the rest of you...........this is the official line on it by the way!

Finally Chris i've rememberd where i heard "Sinatra sings over Riddle strings" (Huntly In Love) before...Its been bugging me since '99 ! Until i bought Vans "Hardnose The Highway" on CD this week. Shows how long it was since i played the vinyl.... not as good as the tingle with "tall and flowering in Dutch sailors eyes though" You Are a cad.

In fact someone(not me!) should post an essay on here about all the influences and references in Bathers songs......Nabokov,Hepburn,Vermeer,Fitzgerald and tons more that i'm to thick/badly read to pick up on.Still i suppose stumbling across them is half the fun eh Chris ? Thurmanesue ?

thurmanesque? yeah. well to tell you the truth, thats part of the allure. i like the fact chris' references are all foreign to me. all the places in glasgow, etc.

In that case I am sure you will see them within the next year or ten! You certainly have more chance than most of the people who post here.

The lack of live gigs is always more annoying at this time of the year because the West End Festival is on in Glasgow - the ideal slot for Bathers gigs. When it does happen it'll be at Oran Mor at the top of Byres Road.Thats my prediction anyway...hopefully a month long residency on Saturday nights!!!

Can't be as good as The Plateaux Of Mirror by Brian Eno & Harold Budd one of the all time classics (in a chilled -out style). Budd also did a good album with Cocteau Twins who featured Liz Fraser who appeared on Sunpowder. See , it all leads back to Chris in the end........

"The Pearl" by Eno & budd is just as good. I didnt really fancy the idea of a vocal eno album as I am more into the ambient stuff too but this is really nice. It is a perfect mix I think that sits nicely between both genres. Listening to Cafe Del Mar and Tosca right now! Going to the theivery corporation tommorow.............

might appear twice...gone quiet around here, which might not be a good sign. current summer listening: pale fountains 'pacific street', louis philippe 'the wonder of it all', pearlfishers 'strange underworld of tall poppies' and of course the bathers. been really delving into LB and 'sunpowder' is my new fave. grab some lemonade.

Anyone interested email me or I`ll put them on ebay next week! I also have 5 copies of the DEMOS VOLUME ONE going for £12 plus post instead of the usual £19. And finally 2 copies of the DEMOS VOLUME 5 going for £8 plus post. When they`re gone they`re gone!!!!

Hi to you all from another new fan of „The Bathers“ - thanks to Ian Rankins superb Inspector Rebus Novel “Black & Blue”, where some lyrics of “The Bathers” are mentioned. As I never regretted any musical recommendation made in Rankin’s books, I purchased “Kelvingrove Baby” the other day and got addicted to it after the first listen. Chris keep up the good work, I’ll recommend your CD’s to all of my friends. Greetings from Vienna, Peter

that's interesting. if you can shed some light into the context the lyrics were used in, as well as the lyrics themselves, that would be helpful.

Hi Michael, hi Jimmy!
The following lyrics were taken from “Ave The Leopards” and used as “introduction” to chapter number 2:
“Mind me when mischief befalls me
From the cruel and the vain”
The story of this book is about a serial killer and the corrosive effects of human wickedness, so I think that the context here is very clear. In my mind Ian Rankin is doing a very good job to make Scottish bands more popular. He also mentioned “The Blue Nile” in one of his books and today I own all of their CD’s – and I’m pretty sure this will be the same with “The Bathers”. Apart from Kelvingrove Baby I orderd three other Bathers-CD’s in the last couple of days ;-).

It might interest you to know that Ian Rankin recently teamed up with another Scottish singer/songwriter Jackie Leven and together they done live gigs where Ian would tell a story and Jackie would provide the music/songs. I think it is being released as an album. "Jackie Leven says...." which is also the name of the story! www.jackieleven.com

@Stephen: Hi Stephen! Many thanks to you for your warning ;-). The Blue Nile are great, but they can not be everybodys cuppa ;-). I really love Hats too – it’s so great!
@Jimmy: Hi Jimmy! Many thanks to you for the tip concerning Jackie Leven and Ian Rankin. I wasn’t aware of Jackie Leven and his music before – but now I’m (thanks to you). The sound samples I found at Amazon are very promising ;-). Cheers, Peter
