In case any of you are wondering what a cgi bin is let me explain......its a big giant bin kept at British Telecoms offices where all the guesbook messages are kept. When you click the button to come here the wee men grab all the messages and assemble them here in the right order. The Broadband page is created from a different room where the wee men can run faster and have jump boots to assist so the page appears almost instant. So now you know..............

Theres a new album being made as far as I can tell........certain persons have been visiting certain locations and laying down certain sound. Thats for certain! Sweet Deceit is being reissued and has been re recorded but the word "reissue" is being used in the plural was an "s" at the end so something else is being reissued too! Still nothing positive or certain but certainly rumblings in the wind!

Hi there. I have recently contacted yet another local promoter who has recently brought to Santiago, the city where I live, bands like The Jayhawks (really superb ), Cracker (just fine this time) or more recently Arthur Lee and he said he would like to bring bands like The Bathers as long as they have some support from the record company. To be honest I do not know which record company is going to release the reissues or the new album. I haven't asked Chris either. Any ideas? Definitely not Wrasse? Maybe a major? All the best to the faithful.

Do you want the whistling boys to return............not sure I`m allowed to tell you this so I wont ask and that way I wont get refused.....I`ll just tell you........James Grant and CGT have met up again for the 1st time since 1996 and JG has agreed to do his parts in the reissue of SD. Now I am thinking......surely the reissue has to be promoted so does this mean there will be gigs featuring the SD album and theres now a perfect excuse for JG to at least "guest" at any shows? Who knows.......I dont I assure you ...... I just wonder?

Fair play to you Jimmy you're about the only one keeping the flame alive. What we really want though is the live footage from The Garage with Liz Fraser guesting.Have you even seen it? It truly is the Holy Grail for Bathers fans........

From: Jimmy Email: <a@b.com>
Posted on: Sunday, May 23, 2004, 11:18 PM

Have I seen it?? Hmmm I thought you knew stevie that it was me who done ALL the video stuff including the garage. I will get round to doing it though but I have to say that there does not seem to be much interest at all in video material and thats the main reason I am dragging my heels over it! The footage was great but its like a jigsaw puzzle as it wasn`t directed and with the mayhem of the gig in terms of crowds its not all perfect but I will try it at some point.

Many moons ago in my Great Big Rock Discography i noticed that my two fave Bowie songs had been released as a single in the US only (Rebel Rebel / Lady Grinning Soul).Interesting.Then, reading reviews of the reissued Diamond Dogs album i learned that it was actaully a diffrent version of Rebel so went and spunked £14 only to find that its a shit one , not as good as the version we know and love.... Im pretty cheesed off.

No Jimmy it's a version he did in '74 whilst over in NY.I guess that either he or the record company thought that the original was too long (4:30) or too rough for radio so he shortened it and smoothed it out a bit.Not his finest hour!! PS my E-mail is back to normal now (or should be).

I had a sort of Happy/Sad feeling today when i noticed in the paper that James Grant is playing the Cottier Theatre soon.Happy cos hes good and i may well go to see him but sad cos that's where i last saw my beloved Bathers and they were superb and it all seems so long ago ! Where is the beauty....... Hey Jimmy , don't suppose youve got the Love and Money album Dogs In The Traffic on CD have ye ? If so i'd really love a copy as you can't get it now and my vinyl copy is well Knackered. Its a really cool album (man).

He plays the Cottier the same night as TELEVISION so I`ll be going to that. I saw Kathyrn Williams there last Saturday and she was absolutely superb....what an atmosphere....reminded me of leonard cohen atmosphere!

Nine hours before auction ends a Sweet Deceit cd has reached a stunning 30 pounds price. The record is worth that money and more but this is another good example of how obsessed and haunted by melodies we can get. By the way, my next poetry book in Galician is going to be titled 12, after a Bathers song. The Galician for 12 is "Doce" and it coincides with the Galician for "Sweet". As always thank you Jimmy for keep it going.

If the CD of Sweet Deceit is worth £30 then how much would i get for my Mint condition vinyl version with its beautiful printed labels and pristine lyric sheet, (i'd sooner sell my soul !),they don't make 'em like that anymore.I've also got the CD and it's signed by Chris Thomson so i'm entitled to be smug , yours for a measly 2 million quid.Even then,be assured,i'd have to think about it.Also , while i'm here , get the latest discs by The Blue Nile (High) and James Grant (Holy Love) if you have a soul.I love both but i'm so sad that Chris isn't making music like this anymore (or if he is we're not getting to here it , a tragedy).

Yesterday another Sweet Deceit cd sold for 25 euros. I also have both the original cd and the vinyl, this one given to me as a present by Margarita Vázquez Ponte, drum player and singer with Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes and record seller at Avalanche Records in Edinburgh where I met her and funnily discovered that her family comes from 34 km away from the place where I live. Of course I would never get rid of that beautiful vinyl. Although I normally listen to the cd as the vinyl is really worn out, the 12 incher is like a fetish to me. A true buried treasure for those who don't know it.

something is wrong with the site. i was lucky enough to get here. i needed to post a message regarding the friends again LP i just received. for some reason, side 2 omits the songs: honey at the core and south of love, and replaces them with vaguely yours and lullaby #2. i thought i was going crazy, hearing the same songs on side 2. even though the songs are listed on the back cover and the lyric sheet, they are still not on there. does anyone else have this problem? what is going on here? i thi9nk old flame is out of order too and sunkissed is a different version than the single...

Regarding the Friends Again LP tracks: Yes I had the same problem with my vinyl LP. It must have been a bad batch I guess. I kept that one as it was pretty rare, but at the same time I gave someone my proper LP seeing as I had the CD version. They then lost it which was annoying! Wont be doing that again.

He's getting on in years tho' so he'll probably be having a quiet night in.However , in a just and fair world he'd be performing a headline set at the SECC where , apparently , the "cream of Scots talent" will be doing a Tsunami Benefit .Good cause but funny , i didn't see The Bathers or The Blue Nile on the bill........ pretty certain that there is no such reissue...but there is no particular reason that they would let me know... SD2 will be along shortly though. Jimmy heard a rough of this and it seemed to pass muster. He can be a tough critic... new album SOON!!

It was probably Martin doing a "does thing really work and I am doing it right" message!!! If theres a new album coming then it follows that there will be gigs to promote it. At least thats what normal bands do :o)

Hi folks, I took the plunge and bought 'Sweet Deceit' from Amazon... and it arrived today. The CD is from Universal / Island label. It is copyrighted 2004. It appears the CD's are cut 'to order' from www.cdmusicarchive.com (where they can be ordered from). The CD is supposed to have a data section with original artwork/tracklist etc.... mine has artwork from an ABC album! Ho Humm. Excellent album, good preparation for the new CD! Munroe

i tried the link and it turns out they are selling copies of sweet deceit. jimmy, could you shed any light on SD2? would you call it a carbon copy, or something totally different and new? after about 6 months of searching, i still can't find 'lagoon blues', how many did marina print up anyway? LB2 anyone?

From:

Michael, the Sweet Deceit CD for sale on Amazon is not an unofficial copy. It is simply a copy 'made to order' (ie produced when someone requests one) at the Universal web site www.cdmusicarchive.com - hence the low production standards. BTW, Sweet Deceit is excellent!!!!!!

From what I can gather it`s a legitimate operation but one of the readers on here emailed me privately and he was CONVINCED he had bought a bootleg. It was on an unlabelled 48x CDR and he said there were spelling mistakes and that the artwork "resembled" the original but was extremely poor quality. So you`ll all be rushing to get one eh? SD2 is a completely re-recorded version and from what I heard it sounds stunning! As for LB2 I seem to remember a long time ago CGT said his "next album" would be in the vein of LB so maybe we`ll get a LB2 after all.

I'm getting confused now Jimmy. I had got the idea that SD2 was a completely new album but called that because the songs were in a similar vein , but are you saying that its new versions of the same songs ? If so it'll be interesting to hear but i can't say i'll be holding my breath.....CGT did this already for the compilation and the results were underwhelming surely?I'll still buy it though. And if this is the case whens the new album (of NEW songs) due out and on what label are these releases? C'mon Jimmy or Chris this needs clearing up.....

Also , since i last saw the band (Cottier ) i've got two mates into them and we're all dying for live shows.Jeez , how long does it take to knock out some songs on a piano/acoustic guitar anyway? The results would probably be just as good as the studio stuff (i've heard some superb "demos") and cost less.Chris , fire out a lo-fi album once every 18 months or so , get youself on a roll man..... Voice , piano, bit of acoustic and some CELLO.....

There is TWO albums coming out. One is a brand new album with brand new songs and like I said I remember chris saying it will be in the vein of Lagoon. That was a long time ago though and so it may not be anything like LB I have no idea. I have been told nothing and I havent heard a single note of it. See next message...........

The other album coming out which is named SD2 by us/chris is in fact a re recording of the whole album. So YES it is all the same songs re recorded. I didnt like the Best of either and I thought the only good tracks were Thrive and If love could last but I like SD2.

Totally agree that the vinyl of Sweet Dceit sounds superb and I still have an unplayed copy which CGT gave me years ago. On saying that though almost ALL vinyl sounds better than any digital format. You can "feel" the sound not just hear it!

Hear , Hear Jimmy !! Here's my Top Five Albums that sound better on vinyl : 1.Rain Dogs by Tom Waits 2.The Trinity Sessions by Cowboy Junkies 3.Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen 4.The Best Of Scott Walker 5.Astral Weeks by Van Morrison

For me, Sweet Deceit is the easily the greatest album of all time. I love its edginess and raw passion, with Chris yelping and growling like a wild man. Its slightly reminiscent of early Elvis (circa Sun Sessions). I'm concerned that SD2 will overly polished and hence diluted. Like Stephen, I'd also prefer Chris to go lo-fi.

here's something i've just noticed. some of you may have spoken about this years ago but the resemblence between 'time regained' and blue nile 'headlights on the parade' is uncanny. royalties anyone?

I wonder where the Bathers would be if they had the funds and publicity that LINN generated for the Blue Vile!!!

From: Stephen Email: <stevie@bfcrescent.freeserve.co.uk>
Posted on: Wednesday, April 13, 2005, 09:20 AM

Steady on Jimmy ! That's too cheeky. The funds and publicity can only get you so far but you've got to have the songs/talent to back it up. The Blue Nile had it in spades and Hats is one of the greatest albums ever made , up there with Astral Weeks , Rain Dogs and Lagoon Blues . So get it up ye !!

From: Jimmy Email: <jimmysmith@btinternet.com>
Posted on: Wednesday, April 13, 2005, 10:00 AM

This is one area where we fail to agree Stevie. My own opinion of the Blue Nile is that they bring out albums with one......maybe two good songs and the rest is really mediocre crap. On the 1st you had tinsel town and on the 2nd you had "lets go out tonight" (or whatever its called) ...after that I didnt even listen to anymore. And then theres CGT who brings out albums choc full of beautiful songs and gets nowhere. Publicity is EVERYTHING ......christ look how the Wets went on and on year after year on ONE album and when it came time for the 2nd they......re recorded the first one!!!! Thats a classic example of clever managemnt on NO MATERIAL. If they hadnt had LINN`s money they would be about as famous as Tinderstix!

i do like the blue nile, but the way they go about recording an album every 8 years, you would think there would be no question about each albums' merits. i understand your point as i'm sure stephen does. cgt is a far more talented artist, is fairly consistent with his releases, and yet he goes unnoticed. what are wets? i didn't catch that point.

I feel The Bathers have been mining the same creative vein for too long now, effectively making the same album over and over. I would love to see Chris depart from the ol' tried and trusted formula and do something completely different - he unquestionably has the talent. I look at the variety in Bowie's catalog (Hunky Dory, Young Americans, Low, Station to Station, Scary Monsters) and wish Chris would take similar creative risks.

From: Jimmy Email: <jimmysmith@btinternet.com>
Posted on: Wednesday, April 13, 2005, 09:24 PM

Eh? He might sing about the same subject over & over but the albums are totally different to me. Unusual places is like Young Americans....Sweet Deceit is like a cross between a springsteen and waits album. Lagoon Blues is like a classical album with lyrics and is pretty damn unique. Sunpowder again reminds me of Bowie in that its like an album full of Lady Grinning Souls. Kelvingrove Baby is very commercial and almost Dylanesque. Pandemonia to me was pure crap with the exception of something precious but that wasnt written by chris. Then when you think of friends again...totally different again and the rockin Bloomsday which I wish there was more material of.........I cant say I agree that ANY of that "is in the same vein" ?

From: Hintry Email: <Hintry@hotmail.com>
Posted on: Wednesday, April 13, 2005, 10:02 PM

At a stretch... I concede that Fortuny, Unusual Places and Trapped & Unwrapped are different, but Lagoon Blues, Sunpowder, Kelingrove and Pandemonia - like kissing cousins - are heavily related. For example, "Easter Sorbonne", "Night is Young", "Twelve" and "Supernatural" could all be from the same album.

Fair enough Jimmy , you don't like The Blue Nile , i'll live. No way can you come out with the statement that Pandemonia is" pure crap" though. It may be , possibly , the worst Bathers effort but that still puts it way above most other bands/artists. it really grew on me baby.......

From: Munroe Email: <munroe12345@hotmail.com>
Posted on: Thursday, April 14, 2005, 06:19 PM

Hmmmm, I must be missing a big point here, as I think Pandemonia is a great piece of music. Stuff like Deamless, Sundown and Longing, and The Belle Sisters create a wonderful mood. Mix in the Sleeper Fragments, and the title track...... pure class. Anyone know an approximate timeframe for the release of SD2 and the new material..?

From: Jimmy Email: <jimmysmith@btinternet.com>
Posted on: Thursday, April 14, 2005, 08:54 PM

I forgot about the Belle Sisters and agree that was a good track. The others though were songs that to me, didnt quite make it....I cant explain it only to say that dreamless and sundown sounded like they were going to be great but were somehow faulty. Yellow crombie on the Bathers Demos Vol 5 is superb although incohesive......if it had been done like that on the album......in fact I loved all the Pandemonia stuff on the outtakes much better than the album apart from the title song which I just dont like in any shape or form!
