I just had a quickey before work this morning, but I´m impressed. Everything looks great. Had some difficulties though to read some texts because of the background. But in the same time the background is a bit worrying (pardon the Swenglish) it´s exciting. Tell you more when I´ve been out again.

I am dying for someone to tell me my radio station is working so if you go to my site and then go to NEWS and click the link that says THE IDYLL TRANSMISSION you can then download a TINY little program onto your desktop and you will see a WINAMP icon...........once that icon is sitting on your desktop you can dbl click it any time you are on the net and you will hear my radio station without even having to go near my site!!! If the broadcast stops at any time you can restart it by clicking PLAY on WINAMP or by dbl clicking the icon on your desktop again.

---

From: Jimmy Email: <jimmysmith@btinternet.com>
Posted on: Sunday, April 01, 2001, 07:23 PM

I "think" I have discovered why the radio transmission keeps stopping. It does it when a track has not been faded in/out like when taken from the middle of a live album.I will correct this but it WILL take some time as many tracks will have to be deleted and reuploaded so please bear with me as this construction work takes place!

Hi Jimmy- I heard about your Bathers site through the grapevine; I'm the guy running Jocelyn Square, the Love And Money/James Grant website (http://members.aol.com/cliveyoung/lnm.html). Thanks for the link in your bootleg CD section. Believe it or not, I actually DO have some Friends Again material on my site, hidden away in the Articles Archive at the bottom of the page. There's also an FA section in the discography, too. Feel free to "borrow" any of it if you like. Good luck with the site, looks like you're off to a strong start! Clive

Hi folks The Bathers were totally amazing at The Cottier Theatre last Monday(June 18).Highlight for me had to be Angel On Ruskin although superb takes on Ave The Leopards (twice!)and Fermina Fair made it a close call. The band were well augmented by some fine trumpet playing but i do sometimes yearn for those lovelorn strings of old.Whatever became of Clare Sargent ! I was very surprised that no new songs were aired though. Thanks for the snippet of Carnival which some moron (me!) shouted for Chris. Anyway, top night , roll on new album (and compilation).

I love the music on the homepage (I'm gonna listen again in a minute). I'm not sure if you change it regularly, but the one I'm listening too now has that 'Scottish / Irish' rebel sound to it (and I love it). It must be some Scottish blood I have in me as I live just on the 'upside' of Hadrians Wall ... lmao. (Question - how do I VIEW your guestbook ??) Best of luck in your endeavours. Jmsky.

Hey Jimmy how goes it, keep up the good work and no I haven't had the operation yet I'm still using the wife's Email address. Basically I'm a lazy bastard so I either use this one at work or her's, I can only get replies at the wife's though because they kind of frown on the system being used for personnal stuff but if they want me to work up here in the frozen wastes of Aberdeen (I know it's meant to be summer but nobody told sheep city) they've got to expect me to abuse their system. Take it easy, Tom Nelson (things must be bad up here if I can't wait to get back to Falkirk every weekend)

Looking forward to the compilation but ...... Who decided the track listing? I don't think it can be a "best of " without The Idyll Off Crown Circus or Carnival surely ? And then there's Sweetheart Sessions.....These three are all far better than bloody Girlfriend or 22.

Absolutely agree with you on this one! They have included Pandemonia too which I think is awful but I think Wrasse had the final say. Theres no Through The Old Holmwood either. Wrasse is trying to pick the most commercial stuff as far as I can see. Shame!

One runs Windows 98SE, another WinME and this machine, which is new, runs XP home using Windows media player version 8.00.004477. My browser is IE6 although I've also tried accessing using Opera. Got any ideas? I noticed you didn't make any reference to my question about sales numbers. Is it a bad question? Are there chart positions in Scotland or England that could be referred to? UJ

UJ...............do this on your WIN98SE machine.........you need the windows media player codecs installed........here is the url.........http://members.madasafish.com/~theidyll/Files/wmpcdcs.exe ..................I will send you it in an e mail and you can download by RIGHT CLICK and choose SAVE TARGET AS......If that doesnt work you need more codecs(you can`t have enough of these in your system so dont worry) I used to make all the codecs available in the FILES section and I will re-instate these files as they are very handy and I still have them uploaded so all I need to do is provide links.

From: Jimmy Email: <bathers@btinternet.co.uk>
Posted on: Wednesday, April 17, 2002, 06:08 AM

OK I have reinstated the FILES page and you now have ALL the codecs you need to play most of the video material available on the net. It is a good idea to download and install all 5 programs. The only strange one is the DIV x codec which, after installing, you should go to START then PROGRAMS then DIV X and choose the RUN ME FIRST option.......then do a reboot and you are all set!!!!

Well thanks for the codecs. I'll download them tomorrow and we'll see. I noticed you never answered my sales volume question. Was I violating some behavioural norm or point of etiquette by asking this real world question? All I want to know was if it went well. Did Desire Regained sell? As you may have guessed I am many thousands of miles away from Scotland both physically and in the cultural sense too. But some indication would be appreciated. Thanks Jimmy. UJ

UJ......I have no idea how the LP sales went as its not the kind of information I have access to. In fact if you look in the NEWS section you will see that there has been nothing added in months as I have had no information of ANY SORT for about 6 months. The only thing mentioned was a "side project" by CGT under the name "The Clouds" but when I ask any questions about this now I get ignored. In fact I dont really get ANY questions answered any more .................my only hope is that the big cheese is up to something! I don`t know if theres any gigs planned or if theres a new album being made or if the planned re-release of Sweet Deceit is still on the cards. Perhaps this is the "lull before the storm" .......what I DO KNOW is that a certain someone has become the proud owner of a Bechstein Grand and is pr

Thank you for your response, Jimmy. 30,000.....that's not bad, is it? He has a Bechstein does he? Lucky man. I haven't heard from him since Christmas but to be fair - I owe him a response. Any information on his possible 'Clouds' project would be welcome. Has there been any word on the young masters collaboration on a song called (tentatively) 'Alien End Theme' to which the man himself was supposed to be writing and recording vocals? So if you're not hearing much from on high are you still getting material for your 'unofficial' Bathers cd's? UJ

From: Jimmy Email: <bathers@btinternet.co.uk>

Well UJ it seems you are much better informed than me because I have never heard of this song. As for "The Clouds" I was promised a listen in "early january" but heard nothing, not even rain. Now I am told it`s "someone else`s baby" so thats a "pass the buck" and means simply that we will never hear it. There is no new material for cd`s and there seems to be no sign of any live dates so its all doom & gloom on that front which could have serious consequences for the site as I cannot afford to keep things going. Ho Ho Ho is there any light at the end of the tunnel

My, oh my, what a gloomy prognostication... I hadn't been back to your site since early May so I'm just now hearing of the drying up of new stuff. If you were to close this site it would be a great loss. There IS a song called Alien End Theme and CT is supposed to be working on it. I might have to prod him a bit, politely of course. I wonder, does he visit here at all? Don't give it up Jimmy. If you need any more photos to encourage you something might be arranged, eh? UJ

Can it really be November since there was any Bathers news ! I was searching because there's often a live date round about the time of Glasgows West End Fesival but apparently not this year. I can only assume that Chris has secluded himself away somewhere and is planning a classic , magnificent , magnum opus which will blow everything else he's done into insignificance. Or am i only dreaming. Fingers crossed.

You had better not be dreaming. I added an Mp3 and a Lyrics section but I don`t even have the inspiration to put it in the news section due to the total lack of news. Chris doesn`t even mention the Bathers anymore when I Do hear from him so what can I tell you except that I hope you are right.

I was just reading that the compilation sold 30,000 which is pretty good considering that when i spoke to Chris (the one and only time!) after a Tron theatre show in 97 he told me that the average sales for a Bathers album was about 6,000!!! Signing to Wrasse has helped sales then but also prompted the longest period of inertia in Bathersworld ever.Maybe our man's just got sick of so much genius for so little reward.Meanwhlie , Will Youngs in the Top Ten doing Light My Fire..... I really do despair.Still , thanks for the ride Chris ,it was glorious.

If you want to try something different go into HMV or any other large music shop , go to the Classical section , find the NAXOS budget range and for a measly £4.99 you can pick up a CD of Satie compositions called Piano Works (selection). It's all short pieces and very beautiful and moody and very, very Bathersesque! Go on , be adventurous ! PS i trust you've all read The Great Gatsby by now......

Just received the band's first 2 Cds and had to put in a comment. Usually when you get into a band laer on in their career you are somewhat disappointed when you get their earlier work. Either cos its pretty niave or maybe they were just cr*p at the start. This is certainly not the case as Sweet Deceit is brill. The production is not as lavish as Pandenmonia but sounds so crisp and the piano on "The Idyll" is superb on my new Cyrus sound system. Although Chris appears to be going through a Bowie/Waits phase it does not detract from a fine album. He must be frustrated at the "sucess" of Will & Grace, sorry, Will & Gareth but as long as he is making such fine music then he should be satisfied and if my purchases can keep him in some nice red wine whilst he writes then my job is done.

Hi, this one is for Stephen... Yes, Lagoon Blues is probably a better masterpiece than the masterpiece Sweet Deceit is...and probably Sunpowder is a better masterpiece than the previous two...and Kelvingrove Baby ? Another masterpiece... For personal reasons my favourite albums are Sunpowder, Lagoon Blues and Sweet Deceit but I think all of them should be considered the perfect soundtrack to beauty and poetry.

A friend of mine brought me a CD he had borrowed from one of Glasgow`s public libraries. This was around 1991 and he said to me "I think you will like this....it`s your cup of tea but don`t get into it too much because the band have split up and the writer has formed another band called Bloomsday.....oh and by the way they are from Glasgow". When I played the album the first thing which struck me was the PRODUCTION.......my first thought was that perhaps this was an unknown Glasgow artist(I had never heard of Bathers OR Friends Again) showing that he can produce an album sounding as good as any of the so called Major Artistes Probably CGT would prefer if it had been the MUSIC that struck me first but it was`nt it was THAT sound man!!!! I thought the album was good enough that I kept playing it and playing it.

This was totally creepy if you ask me..........I was left wondering how a musician could paint such an exact description of a place with music..........perhaps subconciously I DID KNOW these places and their names but man oh man it was part of the addiction to that drug we call Bathers. And thats part of my reasons for also declaring SWEET DECEIT to be a masterpiece that can never be surpassed in the same way as Ziggy is for Bowie!

In case anyone is wondering why the post was split into 3 messages it`s because the guestbook has a word limit so BE WARNED and if you type a long message right click and COPY it before posting in case the end of it is cut off.The first post in my 3 part message is an example of the limit as that part uses the maximum word count allowed. Yawn this all boring isn`t it?

Funny it was 1991, Jimmy. That was exactly the last time I spent some time in Glasgow and I have always wanted to return. But this happened to me in Edinburgh, 1991. I already knew The Bathers because I loved Friends Again only lp and loved 1987's Bathers album UPTD. I had even contacted I guy called Tiny at Go Discs! who sent me a 7" promo I never received...

I had also heard a Scottish band named Jesse Garon & The Deseperadoes covering "If I Needed Someone". I got to a shop called Avalanche Records in Edinburgh and they told me to go to another branch of Avalanche in a different part of the town. They assured me I would find some help there. I got there and asked about Jesse Garon's record. The two clerks in the shop, boy-girl, look at me puzzled. They are the guitar player and drum player-singer in the band. She goes home for a copy. In the meantime I have a look in the shop and I come across an unknown Bathers record. It's Sweet Deceit, a mint vinyl copy at 4 pounds.

I never paid for it as it was given to me by Margarita Vázquez Ponte, Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes drum player and singer. She was the daughter of Galician immigrants in Scotland and her parents had a bar 36 Km away from my home here in Santiago, Galicia, Spain. They had a cd copy I was also offered but I didn't accept it as I didn't have a cd player then. The lp became the soundtrack to most of the things I wrote in the following months. The same happened with the other Bathers albums, especially Lagoon Blues, Sunpowder and Kelvingrove Baby. The Bathers are included in the Thank You's at the end of my poetry book which is coming out in October. It was destiny, I think.

The 2nd url given is correct and there is a number missing from the first so I am sure you can work it out(now fixed). I never tried the first one but I did try the second one.

It was great reading through all the recent posts. Hope we hear some new music from Chris soon. I think I'm going through with withdrawal. Favorites for me are "Lagoon Blues" and "Pandemonia" with the others falling in behind, but of course they are all very special. Regards, Brent

You're so right Jimmy it does seem like a bloody lifetime. I've been giving Pandemonia and Desire Regained a bit of a re-appraisel over the last couple of days and they're better than i'd given them credit for.I was guilty i suppose of comparing them to the earlier works of genius and they came up short. However , going back to them with an open mind?....superb stuff.Way better than anything else i've bought lately. If there's a point to all this i've forgotten it...oh yes,HURRY UP CHRIS!!!!

Bored with the same old stuff , i'm always willing to check out music that i haven't heard before so hows about posting your Top Five Non-Bathers "Bathersesque" albums (if you know what i mean). Here's mine:1.ASTRAL WEEKS by Van Morrison 2.HATS by The Blue Nile 3.THE BOATMANS CALL by Nick Cave 4.THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT by Tom Waits and 5. TO STARS by Jacques. All superb. The Nick Cave one could almost be a Bathers album,if you wiped the vocals and put Chris Thomsons singing on it you'd never see the join. Don't anyone mention Tindersticks tho' , i went right off them when i realised that the singer sounds just like Vic Reeves doing his Pub Singer on Shooting Stars!! Have a listen if you don't believe me.So C'mon, tell me some new magnificent love-lorn things to listen to.

You are right Stephen but he(cgt) seemed to be churning them out over the past few years so it`s tough when suddenly things go all quiet. Listening to the EELS "Desires of the Galaxy" right now. What about CHUCK PROPHET "No other love" not Bathers style but good stuff. Also listening to EMILANA TORRINI "Love is the time of science" very EDIE BRICKELL indeed with shades of BJORK(yugh!)

Talking about waiting for new albums probably there is nothing worse than being a Scritti Politti fan or a Kate Bush fan. I do like The Blue Nile very much, especially their first album, and let me recommend you something new and extremely beautiful. The Walkabouts man Chris Eckman has recently produced an album titled LIFE AFTER VEGAS by a superb Portuguese band called RAINDOGS.

Theres 2 new titles on the way from myself. 1. Cumbernauld Theatre during the Kelvingrove baby tour. 2. Tron Theatre 30th Nov 1999 - Only 2 songs from this were used on the Tron 99 CD so this is the first night complete with bonus tracks from the soundcheck at Lemon Tree same year. The Tron cd will be a double cd set and the Cumbernauld a single cd. I am working on the covers at the moment...............
